The experience of making final arrangements, while you’re still alive, is an interesting one. I, like millions of others, found myself procrastinating. I talk about this stuff all day long, I didn’t want to think about it for myself. I finally had peace with cremation but that’s really because of the Neptune Memorial Reef (located three miles off the coast of Key Biscayne). When I first started working in death care, entombment was my first choice. I thought, if it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me!
I feel pretty naïve about it now. Then I decided I didn’t want to be cremated with fire so I decided on water. It’s called Aquamation. You’re basically boiled with chemicals and everything but bones goes down the drain. But very few locations do it and only one in Florida who was planning on shutting it down anyway. So strike that one off the death list.
Did you know that the cremated remains you receive are mostly bone? Not everyone knows, or wants to know that. A little insider info, free of charge.
My parents were okay with cremation before I was and I got them beyond prepared years ago. Celebration of life with all the bells and whistles. Even bought their companion urn. Which I display in my bedroom much to my father’s horror.
My parents’ beautiful urn.
Then my mom said to me once: “You mean someday you’re just going to scatter us in the ocean? Won’t one of the grandkids want us?” Unfortunately, mom, probably not.
I’ve been working with Neptune Memorial Reef and I’m beyond sold with this group of people. The best place to see what they’re all about is on YouTube. The coolest part about them? They put your pets in there FREE OF CHARGE. If you’re a pet person, chances are you have a box with a furry best friend at home. I know I want my current pooch and any future guys with me.
I’ll keep it brief but basically they mix your remains with Portland concrete and mold it to the shape you purchased. They have all kinds of creative items (starfish, sting ray, sea turtle, mermaid) or you can select a cylinder or picket for the more cost conscious. It comes with shipping, creation, plaque and deployment. Even a picture and the coordinates for future guests to visit (in SCUBA gear of course). It’s a great choice for people who love the ocean, the environment or just want somewhere on earth to say “I
In conclusion, we’re all set and we never have to think about what’ll happen when we die or burden anyone with any of it. I don’t care where you do it, just do it. It’s a truly priceless feeling.
